When and How to Trim Hedges

Dormant Season

Hedge trimming is recommended during the dormant season (Mid-October to Mid-March), so it maintains a manicured look through the fall and winter months.

Plants spend a lot of energy in the spring, so major spring trims can waste the vitality of new growth.

Keep It SHarp

Use sharp tools.

It’s important for plant health to maintain your tools, as dull blades will rip and tear the plant, instead of leaving a clean cut.

Bad cuts damage the health of the plant and leaves it open to disease.

Easy Does It

Don’t cut too much at once!

Inexperienced trimmers commonly cut off too much of the plant. If you remove too much, it may be gone for good, leaving your hedge patchier than a Dalmatian.

What equipment is needed to safely and effectively trim a hedge?

There are many tools to use when trimming hedges, like sharpened secateurs (pruning shears), powered hedge trimmers, battery power equipment, and other specialized arboriculture tools for climbing and cutting.

For safety, we use ANSI Z.133 Standardized equipment, CSA Approved Ladders & inspected “work at heights” equipment, like high quality Japanese Hasegawa Orchard Ladders, Secondary tie-ins for safety, a helmet with visor and ear muff protection.

Initial consultation to discuss scope of work
Create a comprehensive estimate
Client gives verbal or written agreement to the estimate
The estimate will be converted to job queue and given priority in sequence or based on the hazards involved
Work will be scheduled and performed by the Holly Wood Tree Co. team
Invoice payable upon receipt will be issued after client is satisfied and work has concluded
